Jun Su An

As an immigrant who moved to USA during early adolescence, I am always split between two different cultures and worlds. While the split is sometimes painful, I find comfort knowing that this struggle is universally experienced among immigrants, and often bridged through food. As a result, I’ve always had a fascination of how folks experience and share food with each other as well as outside of their immediate culture. Houston is the 11th city I’ve personally lived in, and the place that I’ve stayed longest. This project pays respect to the city, its people, and variety.

Market is an homage to all the different textures, cultures, and variety that is here in Houston, and a way for me to find comfort in the diaspora. Using black and white film paired with panoramic camera allows me to mimic how a human eye would take in the scene. This ensures that the most amount of objects will be packed inside a single frame, creating a feeling of immersion.

These photos are all shot on a Horizon mechanical swing lens panoramic camera @ f/8, 1/60th seconds, on Kentmere 400 film pushed to 1600 ISO.
